What to do what to do...

Policy change will allow early entrance to kindergarten
Friday, March 28th, 2008

The Anoka-Hennepin School Board recently approved a new policy that will allow parents to apply for early entrance into kindergarten for children who are almost 5 years old. Parents and guardians of children whose fifth birthdays fall between Sept. 2 and Oct. 31 can submit an application to have students considered for that year's kindergarten class instead of waiting until the next year."These are the students most emotionally and socially ready for kindergarten," said Lynn Montgomery, assistant director of student services. "We want this to be a positive, successful experience for the child so we want to do everything we can to ensure that."Prior to this change, district policy was that every child entering kindergarten had be 5 years old by Sept. 1 of that year. The application for early entrance into kindergarten includes a parent/guardian questionnaire, copy of birth certificate and a letter of recommendation from a preschool or other group setting teacher and is due by June 1. A formal intellectual assessment is also required, and will be administered free of charge in June at the Anoka-Hennepin Family Welcome Center by a licensed school psychologist.Early entrance into kindergarten applications will be reviewed by the assistant director of student services, the kindergarten principal, and the building principal. Each student will also have a follow-up review after six weeks in the kindergarten program.

I think I'm going to try and get Brady in. If he doesn't pass - he doesn't pass, and it wasn't meant to be...

It amazes me how early that let children into school. I think before long 3 year olds will be going to kindergarten! Everybody is so busy trying to educate their children as early as possible and make them geniuses and not let them be children.

I'm not saying that what you're doing with Brady, just my observations on public education. I'm sure Brady is ready to move forward and its not like he's that much younger than his peers. It's always baffled me that a child can be so intelligent and ready for K and yet they can't enroll because their birthday is later in the year! I've run into this with several people at church! Maybe they should make it an individual basis and not based on age? I don't know...just my thoughts...

I feel the same way as Jamie. Although being on an individual basis would probably not be very cost effective for the schools to interview each and every child twice by so many different people and all the paperwork...esp. when a child goes back a second year after being told he wasn't mature enough the first time - but then what happens to the kids who are 5 and STILL not ready for K? There are probably more of those than people realize.
